Introduction:
My grandfather loves to tell stories from when he was a child and describe his exciting life on the East Coast. Listening to his stories, I began to wonder why he ever migrated to California. One day I asked both of my grandparents why they each decided to suddenly move across the country to begin new lives. In the novel The Warmth of Other Suns, Isabel Wilkerson tells the story of three people whose lives were changed because of the Great Migration. Just like the characters in the book, my grandparents were forced to move West in order to live better lives. I was also shocked to discover the real reasons and amazed at how their values changed along with their setting. The moves made them realize how important family really was to them. Due to my grandparents’ migrations and and reminders of African American struggles, family became the main priority in our lives.
